A Creator's Guide to Securing Your Account
How to Protect Your Creator Account from Unauthorised Access
As a creator, your TikTok Shop account plays an important role in your business, income, and community. Protecting it helps ensure your continued success on the platform. We know how much effort goes into every video and product showcase, and your security remains a top priority.Digital "account takeover" (ATO) schemes have become more sophisticated. But don’t worry, staying safe doesn’t have to be complicated. Here is everything you need to know to lock down your account and keep your creative business thriving.
What is an "Account Takeover" (ATO)?
An account takeover happens when an unauthorised person gains access to your account. In many cases, attackers do not “hack” the platform itself. Instead, they use phishing and social engineering techniques to trick creators into revealing passwords, verification codes, or payment details.Part 1: Secure Your Login
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Think of 2FA as a second lock on your front door. Even if someone guesses your password, they can’t get in without a unique code sent to your phone or an authenticator app.Learn how to turn on 2-step verification.
Best Practices:Use an authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator) instead of SMS where possible, as app-based authentication is generally more secure against interception attempts. Please also ensure that your authentication app is installed on a secure device that only you can access.
Recognise and avoid phishing
Phishing is when an attacker pretends to be a trusted source to trick you into sharing sensitive information. Attackers often pose as TikTok support accounts or staff and send a link that looks official but leads to a fake login page.Important Reminders:
- TikTok will never ask for your password, payment details, or 2FA code by direct message, call, or email.
- Do not log in through links sent by unknown users or unofficial support accounts.
- Before entering your details, check that the web address is an official TikTok domain.
Manage Permission Rights when engaging Third-Party Account Management
Hiring an agency can help you grow, but giving others access to your account adds risk.Best Practices:
- Never share your primary owner login. Use the official "User Management" settings to grant limited permissions instead.
- When a business relationship ends, remove all access immediately in your settings.
Use A Secure Password
It sounds basic, but it works. Avoid using the same password for TikTok that you use for your email or other social media. If one site gets breached, your TikTok Shop remains safe.Part 2: Secure Your Payouts
Attackers often target creator accounts not for the content, but to redirect your earnings. The most common method is changing your bank details to theirs.Lock your payout settings
- Protect bank account changes: When you add or change a bank account, the system requires an extra verification step. Never share the code you receive during this process with anyone.
- Audit your payout method: Check your Payment/Withdrawal settings regularly. Confirm the account on file is yours, and that no secondary payout method has been added without your knowledge.
Use a dedicated business bank account
Keep a separate bank account for your shop payouts. This keeps your shop earnings apart from your personal savings, so your everyday finances stay protected even if your account is ever compromised.Never share verification codes
Whenever a bank account or payout method changes, the system sends a one-time code to your registered phone number or email. Attackers may contact you pretending to be from "TikTok Support" or "System Notification" to ask for this code.TikTok will never ask you to share a verification code. As long as you keep the code to yourself, an unauthorised person cannot complete the change.
How We’re Protecting You Behind the Scenes
Alongside the steps above, we continuously monitor for suspicious activity:- Detecting abnormal logins: If someone tries to sign in from an unfamiliar country or device, we may temporarily pause sensitive actions until you confirm it is you.
- Restricting fraudulent access: If we detect a coordinated ATO attempt, our systems may flag the activity, restrict access, or require additional verification.
- Verifying payout changes: Whenever a bank account is modified or a payout method is added, we send a one-time code to your registered phone number or email before the change can take effect.
What to Do If You Suspect Trouble
If you see a video you didn't post, a change in your payout settings, or receive a notification about a login you don't recognise:- Change your password immediately.
- Check your active sessions and devices. Open your settings, review Authorised Devices, and sign out of anything you do not recognise. Learn how to check your devices.
- Confirm your payout details are still yours in Payment/Withdrawal settings.
- Report the phishing attempt if you received a suspicious link, message, or call, so we can investigate.
- Contact Creator Support through the official in-app Help Centre. If you are locked out, use the in-app account recovery flow to regain access.
